Today was billed as the event's hardest and at the time of writing, just before dark, only 7 of the 20 something field still running have made it back to camp. Some are enjoying a well-deserved beer, but many others are still in the desert somewhere digging desperately as night falls...

Of all the places in the world to start a motorsport event, having the Pyramids of Giza as the backdrop must surely be one of the most prestigious. In the soft early morning light they were a breath-taking sight and all the crews found a little place on the dusty plateau near the podium to take a team photo.

The first SS was not as dusty due to the grassy road.The results ofthe SS1 were the following: Boris Gadasin finished 2nd 6 seconds behind the Czech Miroslav Zapletal and overtaking Leonid Novitsky for more than one minute.

The first day was a bit backwards as the prologue actually took place before the official start, but as you hear in the WRC sometimes in the FIA World Cup start order is all important. X-Raid's Leonid Novistky has a perfectly clear run through the 5.5 km Super Special Stage but for those running behind in his thick cloud of lingering dust it was a nightmare. “It was just impossible to see anything,” Boris said afterwards.
